Gerry Durkin
Storyteller
Gerry Durkin is a Scottish storyteller who has been working as a freelance professional since 2002. He is registered with the Scottish Storytelling Centre and the Scottish Book Trust. He tells stories from many traditions and cultures and brings humour and music into this mix.
Gerry Durkin is currently working for schools that use his services regularly. His approach is all about involving the children and allowing them to participate as much as they feel comfortable doing, gently encouraging them to contribute. He has a strong background in working with all age groups having extensive experience of storytelling to nursery children, all primary, secondary pupils and adult groups.
He has been appointed as Bookstart Music Champion for South Lanarkshire.
He is also Storyteller in Residence for the National Museums of Scotland, after having been Storyteller in Residence in Crookston Castle, Glasgow, for three years.
In that time, he had been involved in many different projects such as The Aberdeen Music and Storytelling Festival, The East Renfrewshire Storytelling Festival, Celtic Connections, The East Dunbartonshire Storytelling Festival, The Scottish International Storytelling Festival, The Paisley Museum Folk Music Weekend, The North Lanarkshire Parent and Child Workshops, The New Lanark Fair Trade Weekend, The Borders Music and Storytelling Festival.
Before becoming a full-time storyteller, he worked for 15 years in libraries, as a Children’s Assistant for the South Lanarkshire Council Libraries.
